Overlooking the City of Changhua 彰化巿, is the Big Buddha 彰化大佛 of Bagua Mountain 八卦山. The Great Buddha sits 72 feet tall on a lotus flower made of ferroconcrete.
Internet searches for images of the Big Buddha turn up mainly daytime photographs, where the shadows created by the sun make Buddha’s eyes seem closed in meditation. However, the night lights reveal Buddha’s eyes are open and looking down upon the city like a guarding sentinel. It was very serene and quiet up on the hill at night, and the night view of Changhua City was magnificent. You should try visiting at night for a different perspective and avoid the crowds. If you do visit during daylight hours, you can actually go inside the statue separated by several levels with worship and exhibit areas. I unfortunately was not able to come back during the day, so I’ll save that for another trip!
