Looking for a place to stay when you visit Taipei, Taiwan? Check into The Grand Hotel (圓山大飯店). It’s a true landmark located on Yuanshan (圓山) in the Zhongshan District. If you’ve ever flown into the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) you may have already caught a glimpse if this 14 story, golden tiled palace. It was the tallest building in Taiwan from 1973 til 1981 when it was dethroned by the First Commercial Bank Building by less than a meter. The beauty of the architecture is reflected not only on the exterior of The Grand Hotel, but in the interior hallways! You can read a little about its 61 years of history here.
For a 5-star hotel, you can actually get a room for as low as NT$3990 + fees, about US $135 a night for a standard room. You definitely can’t get that in the United States! You can always splurge and upgrade to a Deluxe Room with a beautiful view of Taipei City for as low as NT$6400+fees, US $216. The hotel offers free shuttles to Taipei’s MRT system for convenience too so you don’t have to worry about getting around.
I unfortunately didn’t get to wander inside on this trip back to Taiwan since I was on my way to a lunch meeting, but it will definitely be on my to-do list on my next trip… even if I only go for Aftenoon Tea, which is a absolute must if you come to Taipei as well!
